Membership Eligibility


Types of Membership

Membership in the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans is classified as Hereditary, Associate, Junior, Junior Associate and Real Son, as hereinafter defined; provided that they shall have never been convicted of any infamous or heinous crime.

Hereditary Membership. Eligibility to Hereditary Membership in the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans is open to male descendants, not less than fourteen (14) years of age, whether through the maternal or paternal line, of the Soldiers, Sailors, or Marines who were regularly mustered into United States Service and served honorably in, or were honorably discharged from, or died in the service of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Merchant Marine service of the United States of America, or an allied nation during the War With Spain, the Philippine Insurrection and the China Relief Expedition, from February 15th, 1898, to July 4th, 1902.

Associate Membership. An Associate member shall be a male, not less than fourteen (14) years of age, who cannot document an ancestral lineage required for membership as a hereditary member, but who demonstrates a genuine interest in the War With Spain, the Philippine Insurrection, and the China Relief Expedition from February 15th, 1898, to July 4th, 1902, and who can subscribe to the purposes and objects of the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans.

Junior Membership. A Junior Member shall be a male between the ages of five (5) and fourteen (14) years of age, whether through the maternal or paternal line, of the Soldiers, Sailors, or Marines who were regularly mustered into United States Service and served honorably in, or were honorably discharged from, or died in the service of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Merchant Marine service of the United States of America, or an allied nation during the War With Spain, the Philippine Insurrection and the China Relief Expedition, from February 15th, 1898, to July 4th, 1902.

Junior Associate Membership. A Junior Associate shall be a male between the ages of five (5) and fourteen (14) years of age, whose ancestral lineage required for membership as a hereditary member cannot be documented, but who otherwise meets the requirements for junior membership.

Real Son's. Any prospective Hereditary member submitting proof of membership qualifications and lineage that shows they are a son, son-in-law, or step son of a veteran of the Spanish-American War, the Philippine insurrection or the China Relief Expedition may be granted a Real Sons membership.


How to Apply

To join the Order a paper application with the necessary documentation of your ancestery must be completed and submitted. All applications for membership should be mailed with the necessary dues and documentation to the National Secretary, whose contact information may be found below or in the National Officers Page of this site.

Membership Dues & Fee's

Once you have completed the application process it will be necessary to pay the yearly Membership Dues. By paying your membership dues it entitles each Brother to a Membership card, a Certificate, and a subscription to the National Newsletter (The National Son). The Membership Dues & Fee's for Members-At-Large of the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans are as follows.

Initiation & Membership Fee. When a New Brother first joins the Order the total cost for membership is fifteen dollars ($15.00), this covers the Annual dues of ten dollars ($10.00), and the one time Initiation Fee of five dollars ($5.00). After this one time fee is paid Brothers will only pay the Annual Dues.

Annual Dues. Every year the Members-At-Large pay an Annual Membership Fee of ten dollars ($10.00) to the National Organization. Each local Camp of the Order may have an additional, and usually modest, dues structure. For those joining a Camp of the Order the dues will be explained to the prospective Brother by the Camp Secretary or Treasurer.

These dues & fee's should be made payable to the “Sons of Spanish American War Veterans” and submitted along with the membership application and supporting documents.
